Genital Herpes is quite common, with some health experts estimating that 20-25% of the adult population in the United States afflicted. It is not life-threatening and is not a major cause of infertility (unlike Chlamydia) but it can be painful and annoying. Spreading genital herpes to someone can ruin a relationship. Please be aware that 90% of people who have genital herpes are unaware they have it. Genital Herpes is caused by a virus. Unlike bacteria, medical science is not at the point where viruses can be eradicated. Thus a sexually-transmitted disease such as gonorrhea (which as a bacterial cause) can be purged from you body with an antibiotic, but genital herpes cannot. Rather, it must be managed and lived with. There has been some progress though. Over the past 20 years, antiviral medications have been developed. They are not perfect but they reduce the symptoms and incidence of genital herpes. The main ones are Valtrex, Famvir and Zovirax. They are quite similar in efficacy but doctors often prefer one type over the other based on their familiarity with the dosages and side effects. Valtrex is the only one at this time that was studied for prevention which is why they advertise on television aggressively. Click here to Learn More About Genital Herpes.
